Episcopal Chief Appraises Interfaith Week

newarkinterfaithNEWARK - Rev. Mark. M. Beckwith considered the inaugural Newark Interfaith Coalition for Hope & Peace Week, held June 1 through 6, a qualified success.

"We expanded the interfaith breakfast into a week of services for the first time," said Beckwith June 11. "In retrospect, we ought to have given a schedule in advance but we were committed to holding that weekend's interfaith services."

Beckwith, who is also Episcopal Diocese of Newark bishop, worked with other city-area religious leaders in arranging interfaith services June 4 through 6. A mosque, a synagogue and three churches responded by opening their respective services to guests. Coalition materials had listed the five sites as "To Be Announced," however, until the fourth annual interfaith breakfast June 3.

"The interfaith worship services allowed people of other faiths to sit in as guests," said Beckwith. "It was a success as a bridge among faith communities and between those in the worship houses and those in the streets."
