'Inclement Weather' Calls Off Meeting

ORANGE - Those who tried to attend the municipal council conference and regular meeting at City Hall Feb. 16 were met with a cancellation notice at the ground floor entrance.

The meetings were scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. but were canceled due to inclement weather. What the National Weather Service forecasted as a three to four inch snowfall Feb. 15 to 16 amounted to just a light coating.

As of Feb. 16, it was not clear whether the meetings have been cancelled or postponed. Cancellation would mean that the Feb. 16 agenda would be added to that of the next scheduled session - March 2. Postponement would mean that the council and city clerk would have to schedule and advertise a new date after Feb. 19.

"I have to call Dwight Mitchell about that," Council President and South Ward representative Edward Marable, Jr., said on Feb. 16. "Should we decide on another meeting, it'll take at least two days for the clerk to post an advertisement."

Local Talk News obtained a copy of what would have been the Feb. 16 agenda. There were no matters up for discussion in the 7 p.m. conference meeting, which means the council could have gone almost straight into the regular meeting set for 8 p.m.

While there were no ordinances up for second reading - and a possible public hearing and final vote - in the regular session, there were two ordinances up for first reading. One called for establishing a handicapped parking space before the west side of 219 Park Place; the other to vacate part of White Street.

There were 15 resolutions on the consent agenda, however, for council consideration and voting, including adding and removing properties from the city's abandoned properties list and designating RPM Development LLC as official redeveloper of 16 lots within the Central Orange Redevelopment Area. In addition, another one of the resolutions was to authorize a non-fair and open contract with Millburn engineering firm Hatch Mott MacDonald for services for the Orange Reservoir Campbell's Pond Dam inspection within South Mountain Reservation.

"It was not inclement weather, but I have no idea why it cancelled," said Mayor Hawkins, who commented on the issue Feb. 17.
