East Orange currently has two parking pay stations at City Hall Plaza and East Orange Public Library. The four new stations on Central Avenue will be between Harrison Street and Halsted Street.
Tasha Jackson of the East Orange Parking Authority said four stations have been installed, but are not yet running. A total of 34 parking spaces are available for parking between those four stations.
More than $600,000 has been spent to enhance the district and attract more customers. While construction was taking place, the parking meters were removed and customers were able to park their vehicles at no cost.
Customers should follow the directions listed on the pay station, and will need to know their parking space number when paying. Quarters, dimes, nickels and dollar bills can be inserted but no change will be received. The cost for parking is 25 cents for every 30 minutes, which is 50 cents an hour. The maximum time to park is two hours.
After inserting the money, the customer will receive a receipt, which will state the expiration time for the meter. If a customer parks at Harrison Street and his/her time is ready to expire and they are near Halsted Street, they can insert more money to any parking space station for their parking space number.
The parking time is between the hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Other hours - Sundays and public holidays - are free for parking. Expired parking will be issued a $42 ticket by the East Orange Parking Authority.
