On August 14, 2010, the Kieran T. Shields Scholarship Foundation held their 2nd Annual Law Enforcement/Firefighter Basketball Tournament at the Orange High School Gymnasium in Orange, NJ. The teams that participated in the tournament represented the Orange Police Department, Orange Fire Department, East Orange Police Department, East Orange Fire Department, East Orange General Hospital (EOGH had two teams: Team Blue and Team Orange), Newark Police Department, and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
In a relaxed atmosphere, everyone played hard and the audience has enjoyed the games. East Orange General Hospital President Kevin Slavin hurt himself in last year's tournament, so he was cautious and handled his role as a coach in a losing effort. He also played as a guard for a very short period of time.
As the tournament got underway, the semifinals included Newark Beth Israel Medical Center vs. East Orange Fire Department with Beth Israel winning 46-34. In the second game of the semifinals, it was East Orange Police Department vs. Orange Police Department, with the EOPD winning 52-38.
The final game was between the East Orange Police Department and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. The EOPD won 51-30. This was the East Orange Police Department's first championship win in the Kieran T. Shields Foundation Basketball Tournament.
This was really a community tournament and I appeal to local residents from all of the towns to come out and support this event for a good cause when the 3rd annual tournament takes place next year.
