EAST ORANGE - As the Boy Scouts of America celebrated their one-hundredth anniversary this year, the East Orange City Council acknowledged their service to the community.
Troop #8, the oldest African-American Boy Scout Troop in the state, was presented with a resolution from the City Council for their achievements and will oversee a church service at Elmwood United Presbyterian Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Scouts will facilitate the program, read scripture and a former Troop #8 Eagle Scout, now 26, will deliver the day's sermon.
Under the leadership of Scoutmaster Glenn Brown, who has more than 30 years experience, Troop #8 has seen 26 scouts achieve the level of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in the organization.
"All we ask of the community is to help us keep the spirit of scouts alive," Brown stated.
Troop #8 has been in existence for 94 years, was affiliated with Elmwood United Presbyterian Church in East Orange for 50 years and began its community service at Calvary Methodist Church in East Orange.
The troop is also a part of the Orange Mountains District and a member of the Northern New Jersey Scout Council. Although the group is housed in East Orange, the troop services young men from all over the area including Newark, Irvington, Carteret, Somerset, Glen Ridge, Bloomfield and East Orange.
