CAPTION_-_President_Barack_Obama_delivers_the_State_of_the_Union_address_in_the_House_Chamber_at_the_U.S._Capitol_-_Photo_by_Pete_Souza1On January 24, 2012, President Barack H. Obama delivered the annual State of the Union address before Congress and the American people. The president offered a summary of what has occurred during the past year, as well as sharing his intentions to create a trade enforcement unit, a financial crimes unit, lowering the cost of tuition, cutting tax breaks for companies that outsource, immigration reform, growing jobs, and boosting commitment towards renewable clean energy. The one piece of the remarks that caught the eye of everyone was the plea he made to reform how the wealthy is taxed comparably with those of other classes. Here now are excerpts from the address:

“…We gather tonight knowing that this generation of heroes has made the United States safer and more respected around the world. For the first time in nine years, there are no Americans fighting in Iraq. For the first time in two decades, Osama bin Laden is not a threat to this country. Most of al-Qaeda’s top lieutenants have been defeated. The Taliban’s momentum has been broken, and some troops in Afghanistan have begun to come home.

“These achievements are a testament to the courage, selflessness and teamwork of America’s Armed Forces. At a time when too many of our institutions have let us down, they exceed all expectations. They’re not consumed with personal ambition. They don’t obsess over their differences. They focus on the mission at hand. They work together.

He was 75 years old. Details are not clear as to what caused the death of the assemblyman.

Born on June 10, 1936, DeCroce was first elected to the Assembly in 1989 and served the 26th Legislative District. He attended Seton Hall University and made his home in Morris County.

“I lost a dear friend, colleague, and mentor - Assembly Republican Leader Alex DeCroce,” said Governor Chris Christie. “I have known Alex for nearly twenty years. He helped to give me my start in elective politics in Morris County in 1993. He was one of the most kind, considerate, and trustworthy people I have ever had the pleasure to know. He was an enormously accomplished legislator and a tremendous servant to the people of New Jersey. Mary Pat and I offer our most heartfelt condolences to his wife, Department of Community Affairs Deputy Commissioner Betty Lou DeCroce, and to Alex’s entire family. This is an enormous loss for our state and for me personally.”

The 99% Occupying Wall Street

IMG-20111008-001611Over the past four weeks, there have been several thousands of people descending on the Wall Street area protesting in the park. Many of them have been spending the night, going without taking a bath or shower for the first few days.

The group is calling themselves “Occupy New York.” They are outraged at the fact that the upper 1%, made up of the wealthy and rich people, Wall Street corporations, big businesses, and CEOs of banks are not paying their fare share in taxes.

Many of the protesters are young people who have taken out huge college loans, and feel that they will never be able to pay back the money they owe because of the shape the economy is in right now. Jobs, unemployment, high taxes for the middle class people, politics, and outsourcing of jobs are some of the issues on their agenda, as well as bringing awareness and national attention to their cause.
