After winning a game against Kearny 72-48, the East Orange Campus High School Lady Jaguars took on the Montclair Mounties for the Section 1 Group 4 title. On Montclair's home court, East Orange's Center Linda Hamilton led all scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds, especially in the 3rd quarter in which East Orange dominated the game. Teammate Delisha Thompson helped out with 8 points, along with the strong defense of the Lady Jags. The final score was 41-26, with East Orange winning the title.
"We as a team worked hard for this victory," Hamilton said. "We knew they could not play with us."
Top ranked Malcolm X Shabazz High School played its sectional final matchup against Summit. In the game, Aliyyah Handford scored 22 points, while Alyesha Lovett had 11 points. Ka-Deidre Simmons scored ont eh way to a 64-37 win.
"I am proud of my girls. They took the challenge, and the team came together. I'm proud of them, " said head coach Derrick Johnson.
Just like the girls team, the East Orange boys' team beat Montclair 79-37, with that being a semifinal instead of a final. Mario moody led East Orange with 14 points and 14 rebounds. In an Essex County dogfight, University High got by Central 61-60. Seton Hall Prep also had it close, beating Paramus Catholic 70-69.
