When Wayne Smith was elected Mayor of Irvington, he made several promises to the citizens of the city. He said he would reduce crime and ensure public safety. He also mentioned how he would bring new businesses to the city and empower the community to be a part of that trend. Public safety was a tough task to handle. The flow of drugs and crime was prevalent from neighboring cities. At the end of his two terms, he has shown great progress in accomplishing these tasks.
With that said, Local Talk is endorsing Mayor Wayne Smith for another term in office. In addition to achieving what he said he would do, he has continually kept in touch with the citizens. His heart and his actions have proved that he is a person of the people. The Mayor has given the city statewide exposure, not because of violence, but by showcasing the best that Irvington has to offer. He represented Irvington and brought attention and money to the community by becoming the two term president of New Jersey Urban Mayors' Association and served as an executive board member of the NJ League of Municipalities.
After the appointment of Joseph Santiago as police director, crime has declined drastically. Under the leadership of Mayor Smith, many businesses moved to Irvington, including IHOP, an internationally known franchise with 85 local employees.
Like any leader, the Mayor still has a few things he has to work on and improve. However, what he has accomplished so far speaks volumes. Also, with his determination and intelligence, Mayor Smith will be able to bring more resources and more success to the city of Irvington.
Local Talk was started in 2000 to help uplift the community and help move the cities in Local Talk's coverage area forward. Thanks to the feedback of our readers, we see that so far, we are achieving this mission. As observers of the Smith administration, we have seen up close what he has done in relation to what he set out to achieve. Therefore, Local Talk knows first-hand that Mayor Smith is best for the Township of Irvington in the present and the future as well.
Thank you, Mayor Smith, for a job well done and for your commitment to the Irvington community.
