The meeting, hosted by West Ward Councilman Ronald C. Rice, is to review what measures will be in place before the new public elementary school's Sept. 7 opening and beyond. Invited members include the school principal and parent-teacher president and pertinent city administrators plus representatives from the Newark Public Schools, Newark Housing Authority, Essex County Department of Roads and Bridges and the New Jersey School Development Authority.
A document received by Local Talk Newark Aug. 3 states that a memorandum of understanding has been written between NPS and the NJSDA since Aug. 1 concerning Speedway school's outdoor recreational needs. That includes fencing off and otherwise converting part of Bradley Court's adjoining parking lot for temporary recreational or parking use before Sept. 1.
The SDA and NHA have been meanwhile negotiating since Aug. 1 over how much of the 1970s-built Bradley Court II and circa 1940 Bradley Court public housing project's land will be annexed for an ultimate playground site.
The SDA is meanwhile looking to hiring an engineer on or by Sept. 1 to design and oversee construction of that final playground for First Grade and older students.
Essex County and the City of Newark's engineers are to install flashing lights and 25 mph school zone speed limit signs along and beyond the 700 block of South Orange Avenue on or by Sept. 1. A right-turn-only lane on southbound Maybaum Avenue is to be made. North Munn Avenue is to be made two-ways or northbound-only for parking lot access is to be considered.
