NEWARK – Dara Falco, a 24-year veteran of arts education, has taken over as executive director at Newark School of the Arts.
Falco, of Demarest, replaces Steve Shiman, who served as Executive Director from 1975 to 1983 and again from 1997 to 2010. Falco will be responsible for the executive leadership of the organization, which includes strategic planning, school operations, community outreach and fundraising.
"We're excited to welcome Dara Falco to the family of the Newark School of the Arts," said Henry Rinder, president of the school's Board of Directors. "She has an outstanding record of management in the performing arts and is incredibly enthusiastic. She already has bold plans for making our school even better and attracting more students to the arts."
Falco said she hopes to improve the visibility and accessibility of the Newark School of the Arts. She would like to see more people take advantage of the school's incredible resources.
"People tell me we are the best kept secret in northern New Jersey," Ms. Falco said. "I don't want to hear that. I want everyone to know about us."
Falco is also increasing the amount of group classes offered in an effort to increase the overall enrollment in the school. She is particularly focused on improving the school's offerings in dance, visual arts and drama.
Falco comes to the Newark School of the Arts from Riverspace Arts in Nyack, NY, where she served as Managing Director. She has also served as Director of University Event Management at Columbia University and Acting Executive Director of the John Harms Center for the Arts in Englewood. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the State University of New York at Purchase.
