Habitat for Humanity Newark gets building supplies from builder

Habitat_Contribution_4-600The lighting is ready for as many as 20 new homes that will be built by Habitat for Humanity Newark. Pallets of fixtures, wire and other material for home building were donated K. Hovnanian Homes, New Jersey's largest homebuilder.

"We're always looking for ways to be a good neighbor," said Jay McDermott, vice president of distribution and labor services for K. Hovnanian's Builder Services Division. "This was new material, but we won't be using it in our homes, so it made sense to give it to an organization that will put it to good use."

Workers from K. Hovnanian delivered pallets of wiring, fixtures and accessories for building a new home to Habitat for Humanity Newark's (HFHN) headquarters, where they worked with Habitat volunteers and employees to unload and store the materials. Habitat will use the materials on the homes it builds this spring.

"Support from the community like this is what makes it possible for Habitat to live up to its credo of 'building homes, building hope,'" said David Zurheide, executive director of HFHN. "Every contribution of quality, simple materials for our homes enables us to devote more of our resources to finding new opportunities in Essex County to help people realize their dream of becoming homeowners and greater contributors to our community."

K. Hovnanian has worked with Habitat for Humanity in other communities in New Jersey and other states. New Jersey's largest homebuilder, K. Hovnanian is the state's largest for-profit builder of affordable homes that enable towns to comply with the Mt. Laurel decisions.

Habitat for Humanity Newark is an ecumenical Christian ministry dedicated to building simple, decent homes for low-income families in Essex County New Jersey. HFHN builds homes with hardworking partner families who supply more than 400 hours of sweat equity. HFHN finances the home purchase with no-interest mortgages. The organization says 69 families have benefited from homes built with generous donations and by the work of thousands of volunteers. More information is available at www.habitatnewark.org.

Founded in 1959 by the late Kevork S. Hovnanian, the company sells homes in 18 states and the District of Columbia. The parent company, Hovnanian Enterprises, Inc., is headquartered in Red Bank, N.J.
