NEWARK - On Sunday afternoon August 22nd, a 2:30 P.M. "Prayer for the City" was held on Blum Street.
The Prayer was organized by Love From The Heart Ministry, Blum Street residents, three churches on the block, family members of RaJohn Powell, and friends.
The purpose of the gathering was to get several pastors, bishops, imams, apostles, and ministers together on the street to pray for the city of Newark.
RaJohn Powell was the 10th person killed this month, and the prayer was held right at the spot where he was murdered.
Several people that came out and were a part of the prayer were Pastors Ruth McQueen, Full Gospel Movement of Faith, and Pastor Jefferson of Metropolitan Church, and Pastor McCary of Willing Heart Church. They met with Minister Ellis of Love From The Heart Ministry that Friday afternoon. Walter Elliott, representing Bethel World Outreach Ministries, did the Lord's Prayer.
The Pastor of New Beginnings (COCIC) on Blum Street and several of his members attended and prayed for the city of Newark and its young people. Rev. Sanders prayed, as residents from the community read scriptures and prayed along with others.
The event opened up with Minister Ellis asking everyone to sing a few lines of "This Little Light Of Mine."
This was church right on the block where the murder happened, and stood out in the rain to be a part of this day. The young people in attendance left with a positive message, and many of them were touched and moved.
In response to the 10 people murdered in 20 days, scores of other people shot and wounded in the city during the month of August, as well as all the other issues that Newark is facing, this seemed like an excellent time to pray for the city.
The organizers and residents wished to thank everyone who came out and prayed for the young people of the city and the Blum Street community.
