Montclair & Bloomfield Fire Departments Spring into Action

Five of eight fire departments from three counties assisted each other in two separate blazes Dec. 27-28.

Fire fighting units from Bloomfield and Montclair were among those who helped Belleville colleagues in extinguishing a house fire Dec. 28. Belleville Fire Chief Robert Caruso said he put out a mutual aid call shortly after the fire, at 98 Division Ave., was reported at 1:45 p.m.

"We sent over Engine 2 from our Upper Montclair station to the site at 2 p.m.," said Montclair Deputy Fire Chief John Herrmann. "They stayed there until their 5:30 p.m. release."

A Bloomfield Fire Incident Command car was also near the corner of Division Avenue and Oak Street. Nutley Ladder Truck No. 7 was used to douse flames coming from the roof of the two-and-a-half-story house; a NFD ambulance was also on scene.

Other units came from West Caldwell, Kearny and North Arlington.

Belleville, Montclair, Nutley and East Orange had helped Bloomfield in putting out a basement fire at 20 Wagner St. at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 27. Bloomfield Fire Inspector Thomas Peleia said that the fire spread to the single family home's first floor, spreading smoke damage throughout.

Montclair's Herrmann said that the crew of Engine 1 covered Bloomfield's headquarters 3:30-4 p.m.
