Suspect Arrested and Charged in Murder of Infant

Oquan_BlakeNEWARK - On July 7, 2010, Oquan Blake, aka Samaad Blake, pled not guilty to the charges of murdering and sexually assaulting Dalaysia Rhymer, a 7-month-old baby girl who was the daughter of a woman Blake dated. The case will now be presented before a grand jury at a later date.

The mother left the child in Blake's care. When she returned home the baby was unresponsive. She called 911 and the child was rushed to University Hospital on Saturday, June 26 and put on life support. The baby died on Monday, June 28, 2010.

An autopsy performed on Tuesday, June 29 determined it was a homicide. When the child arrived at the hospital she had a fractured skull, a ruptured spleen, broken ribs, bruising to the spine and a lacerated liver. She had also been sexually assaulted.

On July 1, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced the Essex County Prosecutor's Office has issued a warrant for the arrest of 24-year-old Oquan Blake. The arrest warrant was signed by the Honorable Joseph Cassini, 3rd, JSC. At approximately 10 p.m. that night, Blake was arrested without incident at his mother's home in Newark.
