Interview WIth Essex County Sheriff Candidate John Arnold

John_ArnoldAfter many years, a strong candidate has challenged Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura in the Democratic Party primary election. It is vital for the citizens to know if their tax dollars are going in the right direction or not.

Dhiren Shah: Welcome Mr. Arnold to this interview. Why are you running for the sheriff’s position even though Armando Fontoura is a strong candidate and has strong political connections?

John Arnold: I think I am the best man for the job at this point. He is a strong candidate and politically connected. He should not be in the office forever. The platform we are running on is much more about what Essex County needs. Murder in Newark and Essex County; right now, law enforcement does not have solution. The Essex County Sheriff is more responsible for that. We are intent to change it.

167 Newark Police Officers Laid Off

newarkpoliceNEWARK - The 167 Newark Police Department officers whose fate the City of Newark and the Fraternal Order of Police Local No. 12 have been bargaining over the last five months have been laid off as of 4 p.m. Nov. 30.

Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy, in a 11:20 a.m. Nov. 30 City Hall press conference with Mayor Cory A. Booker and Acting Business Administrator Julien X. Neals, said that the officers' last shifts began phasing out at midnight. The 167, mostly officers who were hired the last three years, then turned in their firearms and badges to their supervisors among the city's four precincts.

"The 4 p.m. to midnight shift officers did not go out on patrol," said McCarthy from among 40 members of the metropolitan New York City media in Booker's office. "Their last tours were made over three shifts."

Former Seton Hall Basketball Player Pleads Guilty

robertmitchellNewark- Former Seton Hall University student and basketball player Robert Mitchell plead guilty today to 3rd degree criminal restraint, 2nd degree conspiracy to commit burglary and 2nd degree burglary.

Appearing before the Honorable Alfonse Cifelli, J.S.C., Mitchell, 24, of Brooklyn admitted entering a private, off-campus Irvington Avenue home in South Orange on March 15, 2010 initially to purchase marijuana. Once inside, Mitchell said he and his co-defendant, Kelly Whitney, 27, of Chicago decided to instead rob the residents of the marijuana.

Guyette Found Guilty in Fatal Graduation Shooting

NicoleGuyetteNewark: Oct. 8, 2010 - Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced that an Essex County jury has convicted Nicole Guyette, 20, of Newark of aggravated manslaughter for the death of 18-year-old Sujeiti Ocasio also of Newark.

The jury also found Guyette guilty of two weapons offenses and the simple assault of Jasmine Perez, who was 15 at the time of the crime. Perez was shot in the collar bone but survived her injuries.

Suspect in Murder of Seton Hall Student and Shooting of Four Others Arrested

SHUEAST ORANGE - Law enforcement officials, as of deadline, are still looking for a city resident who they say assisted an already arraigned suspect accused of killing a Seton Hall University student and wounding four other house party attendees here Sept. 25.

After announcing the arrest of Nicholas Welch on Sept. 27 in East Orange, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino said, during a Sept. 29 press conference in Newark, that authorities were working with every applicable law enforcement agency in locating and apprehending a man identified as Marcus Bascus. Later that day, Bascus was apprehended and taken into custody without incident at 316 North Empire Court in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania by officers for the United State Marshals Services, Essex County Prosecutor's Office and the East Orange Police.

Laurino said that Bascus, 19, provided the handgun that Welch fired five shots into a South Clinton Street apartment with early Sept. 25.
