IRVINGTON - The public will have a chance Sept. 14 to say whether the township should change their Springfield Avenue parking meter rates as proposed by the council Aug. 10.
The council, with North Ward Councilman David Lyons dissenting, voted to approve the rate change's first reading. The rate would be changed from $1.50 for 60 minutes to 25 cents for 20 minutes. The latter comes out to 75 cents per 60 min.
Council President David Sowell said that the rate change is in keeping with similar rates in adjacent towns.
"I don't know how much the new rate will be a deal breaker for those thinking about shopping in Irvington," said Sowell. "I know that the meters by the (NJTransit Irvington) Bus Terminal are 25 cents for 10 minutes."
Township Clerk Harold Wiener, after the Aug. 10 meeting, said that the new rates would take effect after the council takes a second or final vote - and 20 days after Mayor Wayne Smith's signature. The new rate could therefore be effective as early as Oct. 4.
