Grant Awarded to Plan Revitalization of Irvington's East Ward

irvingtonbrandnewdayOn Tuesday, July 20th, Irvington Mayor Wayne Smith was happy to announce a grant received by Brand New Day from the Wachovia Regional Foundation. The Foundation awarded the grant to Brand New Day for $85,000 to study and plan the revitalization of Irvington's East Ward.

"Brand New Day, Inc. has been in existence for the past 25 years," said Krishna Garlic, executive director of Brand New Day, Inc.

 

Brand New Day is in construction of 11 affordable homes each with four bedrooms and 3 bathrooms under $150,000. The applicant must qualify the income criteria. The East Ward has been awarded, through Brand New Day, over 2.7 million dollars in federal stimulus money to stabilize distressed housing markets. The planning grant will help develop the revitalization plan near 21st street.

"We certainly thank the Wachovia Regional Foundation for their contribution and planning dollars along with our partnership with Brand New Day in brining much needed housing to this area that has some unique challenges," acknowledged Mayor Smith. Smith is hopeful to turn around the East Ward with this kind of project.

Since Irvington's school project failed, Irvington needs redevelopment in the East Ward. and the administration is hopeful for a turn around with the help of Brand New Day. Brand New Day has been working with the township for the past two years and have done successful projects in the past. Brand New Day is a non-profit corporation in real estate development, community education and organizing property and asset management business. The targeted service areas for Brand New Day include Elizabeth port and surrounding communities including those in Union and Essex counties.
