Irvington Proposes Parking Meter Rate Changes

 

parking_meterIRVINGTON - The public will have a chance Sept. 14 to say whether the township should change their Springfield Avenue parking meter rates as proposed by the council Aug. 10.

The council, with North Ward Councilman David Lyons dissenting, voted to approve the rate change's first reading. The rate would be changed from $1.50 for 60 minutes to 25 cents for 20 minutes. The latter comes out to 75 cents per 60 min.

Another Bomb Scare?

springfieldirvingtonExactly one week after Newark was gripped by a bomb scare, the city of Irvington got one of its own. This time, something really did explode.

Several eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud blast in the morning near the heart of Irvington Center, the main shopping district of the township. One of these witnesses included Zeb Cantlow, a local fitness trainer with a facility at 2 Union Avenue not too far from the scene. He believed the blast occurred near the Supremo Supermarket on Springfield Avenue.

Despite the scary nature of the situation, all the witnesses questioned suggested that the blast had to be small, as no serious ground trembling was felt and no extended echo was heard.

Grant Awarded to Plan Revitalization of Irvington's East Ward

irvingtonbrandnewdayOn Tuesday, July 20th, Irvington Mayor Wayne Smith was happy to announce a grant received by Brand New Day from the Wachovia Regional Foundation. The Foundation awarded the grant to Brand New Day for $85,000 to study and plan the revitalization of Irvington's East Ward.

"Brand New Day, Inc. has been in existence for the past 25 years," said Krishna Garlic, executive director of Brand New Day, Inc.

Irvington Residents Press Quality of Life Concerns

IrvingtonqofIRVINGTON - Township residents and visitors may have seen more police officers around Memorial Park and some other specific areas as early as July 14.

They may have to wait for intended intersection surveillance cameras to be installed, however, and will still have to make an appointment with township officials to air problems and complaints.

The above findings are what came out of Irvington's department head and council meetings at the municipal building July 13. The twice monthly Tuesday night sessions allows citizens to ask questions to the likes of Council President John Sowell, Police Director Joseph Santiago and other key township officials.

Irvington Holds 2010 Municipal Inauguration

irvingtoninaugurationIRVINGTON - Mayor Wayne Smith and Township Council Members D. Bilal Beasley, Lebby C. Jones and Andrea C. McElroy more than carried out a July 1 tradition with their re-inauguration and reorganization here at University Elementary School Auditorium.

Smith, Beasley, Jones and McElroy took vows to uphold and defend the U.S. and state constitutions and to deal with official matters in a fair and unbiased manner before an auditorium audience of 220. The three council members rejoined their four colleagues to re-select West Ward Councilman John Sowell as Council President, among other key appointments.
