Editor's Note for Sept. 2, 2010

DHIRENHello Readers,

The well-respected Mother Teresa was born in August 26, 1910. After over a hundred years of her birth, many celebrated her 100th year anniversary. However, the majority of the world just remembers her as a sacred holy person and a Nobel Prize winner. In this day and age we talk about the people who are famous and popular with money and power. But many times we forget about those who have acted with their inner being, sticking to reality and throwing away the greed that came along their way.

Mother Teresa was one of them. She devoted her life to the poorest of the poor and requested her superiors to move her from a convent school to the slum area of Calcutta, India. Many readers might have seen the movie "Slumdog Millionaire," but have not travelled through or visited the slum area. I have visited some slums in my lifetime. Each time, it was for a very short period of time. I can imagine the dirty smell and the hunger in that neighborhood.

We feel sorry for them. However, the majority of them were happy and enjoying their lives. They did not have any worries, except the day to day work to feed themselves and the mouths of the household. Due to the atmosphere, their life expectancy is usually short. In that kind of atmosphere, it is very hard to go inside the hut, where mice and roaches are part of their life. Mother Teresa lived and started an open air primary school to teach and show the real path to the needy. The slum community was very reluctant to send their children to school, so Mother Teresa and her team had to convince the parents to let their children go to the free school. She stuck to her mission and became a real saint, who has transformed the lives of many and set an example. We all should learn from her and at least act politely with other human beings.

The government bureaucracy is known to all of us. However, the height of careless job execution has seen last week by the state government in NJ. The officers and employees of the state will not lose anything, but the students, teachers, parents and especially the citizens will lose. The education commissioner Bret Schundler was fired by Governor Christie. The governor wants to set an example, but maybe after a few days everything will be forgotten and it will be business is as usual.

Many students enjoyed their summer vacation and are getting ready for the 2010-11 year. Due to the budget crunch, many of the programs will receive a cut. However, the major programs and education will not see a cut and it's possible that the cuts and pressure of receiving free money could improve the quality of education.

Right here in community, many health care facilities that take care of mentally disabled people do not take care about them and let them loose. They are begging and harassing walkers-by. The health department and city officials should look into this and stop it immediately. When these health facilities are getting paid enough money by the government, they do not take care of their clients even though the federal and state government pays them a large sum. They should follow the rules and stop their clients wandering around the neighborhood, asking for money and even offering their bodies and encouraging prostitution. This must be stopped.

Have a wonderful week. I'll talk to you next week.
