Editor's Note 2/22/12

DHIRENHello Readers,

Whitney Houston’s sudden death made a sudden and shocking impact! She is from our area, and an idol to millions. Her singing touches the heart. She is an idol now and will be an idol for years to come. Local Talk has covered a few articles about her and her mother Cissy Houston. She has not only made Newark and East Orange proud, but she has given back to her roots. She has given donations to local charities and the education field. She may be gone, but her immortal soul will be with the city of Newark by way of her funeral. Local Talk and I pray for her soul and give condolences to her family, friends, and fans that will miss her for decades to come. Local Talk will have some more information or articles about her next week as well.

New York Mayor Bloomberg ordered churches to leave board of education properties in the city. The ban went into effect on February 12, 2012. The last services were held on Sunday. Reverend Pastor William Devlin of Iglesia Biblica de Manhattan went on a hunger strike for 40 days from January 17, 2012. He has consumed only water during this time. He and his followers believe that they should not be banned for having religious services. My question to the pastor is that would he allow a Christian religious service on one day, and on the next a Muslim religious service, then Jewish religious service, and then even a Hindu religious service as well as other religions of the world? I don’t think so. The place for education is a sacred place itself, and we should not tie it down with one religion. Forty years ago, the majority of the students were Christians, but now it is different. In my opinion, we should keep religion out of the education system.

300 prisoners were killed in a fire in a Honduran prison. The prison was nasty and dirty, as per the CNN reports. But I think that due to the conditions of the prisons, people are afraid to go to jail, which can bring some violence down.

The demand for oil is low. The weather is favorable, so it will be decreased even more. However, due to the Iran controversy, the supply of oil has been reduced and the oil prices have reached $120 a barrel. At the Clinton era, we reduced the use of gas. We should continue to cut our demands for oil and become independent of fuel. That is the only way we can have the life we used to have 40 years ago. In 1978, the price of gas was $0.59, and today the price of oil is $3.50. However, the minimum wage was $2.65 and now it is $7.15. The gas is five folds costlier but the salaries are only three folds more. So the working middle class and working poor class are getting hurt the most.

Newark has announced that seven schools are closing at the end of the 2011-2012 school year. The students will be directed to different schools and that announcement will be huge for thousands of them. It will be very hard for students to adjust in the new environment and especially with those schools’ existing students. Also, the Board has never taken responsibility about the failing school system for over a decade. One problem will be that the school teachers who were good at the schools may have to lose their jobs. Many plans and articles will come out in the next few months. It will be interesting to see what the superintendent under the supervision of the governor will announce for a plan.

Have a wonderful week. I’ll talk to you next week.
