Hello Readers,
If we have a choice, what will we pick? Violence or non-violence? Negative or positive? The world seems to be going in the wrong direction. If we the media talk about violence and add to the hype about crime, then negative media will draw more attention and pay better, by the way of government payments and commercial advertisements. However, I strive to be positive, and I believe in affecting the world in a positive manner. I cannot change the world, but I surely can make an impact with a few with my positive message.
Newark has been hit hard lately through violence. A bus driver was stabbed seven times, with rocks thrown at buses in the south ward, and eight to ten churches were robbed. However, despite this negative story, we can see that Newark has grown; more businesses are attracted to bring their business to the city. A couple of months ago, when I talked to a few residents, they felt safer than five years ago. They all have some kind of fear. Residents must feel safe. The majority of residents, who have lived in the city of Newark for a long time, love Newark. So for the safety and peace of mind of the residents, Mayor Cory Booker must take strong steps to stop the violence and make the city safer.
President Obama has taken a drastic and needed step, withdrawing all of the remaining 40,000 troops in Iraq. The United States should help other countries, but in a limited amount of time. We are not their guardians for life. We should resolve their temporary problems and get out of their country.
Local Talk Community Foundation had a successful High School Students Public Speaking Contest on October 22, 2011. There were 18 schools that participated, but due to unavoidable circumstances, only 15 contestants showed up. The event was a great success due to the preparation of the students who participated. They tried their best and the quality of speaking got even better from last year. Many had good messages, and we all learned new ideas and can understand what today’s youth is thinking. I thank them, their families, and their schools for participating. I also want to thank NJ Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver, Irvington Mayor Wayne Smith, Essex County Freeholder Carol Clark, East Orange General Hospital President Kevin Slavin, Orange Chief Judge Sybil Elias, Mistress of Ceremonies Lisa Durden, Patricia Balavender, Bethany Johnson, Kalindi Bhatt, Fred Simpson, Walter Elliott, Mutiah Ali, Madge Atkinson, Brother Thomas Ellis, Reginald Ward, teachers, and guests for taking time out of their busy schedules. Also, special thanks to Kristopher Seals, Tanya Green-Smith, Stephanie Gidigbi, Nikki Amos, and Zeb Cantlow. We had a great time and a great event, and we will try to improve it with some changes for next year. The Robert Treat Hotel is a great venue and the Crystal Hall itself was great, except for the poor service of the staff.
Have a wonderful week. I’ll talk to you next week.
