Hello Readers,

The Orange election saw an upset for incumbent Mayor Eldridge Hawkins, Jr., and brings a new face, Dwayne Warren. The unions supported Warren, as well as the well liked former Orange Mayor Mims Hackett, Jr. Also, the citizens of Orange voted out two of the incumbents, Councilman Hassan Abdul-Rasheed and Councilman Rayfield Morton, but re-elected incumbents Councilwoman Donna Williams and Councilman Elroy Corbitt. The citizens have given their judgment, and it should be accepted by all parties. Now, everyone should get back to work for the betterment of Orange.

In Irvington, the West Ward seat usually was not highly contested due to the strong representation by Councilman John Sowell. Now, for the first time, a Haitian woman - Charnette Orelien - has been elected to the seat after John Sowell declared he would not run again for council. Also, the North Ward election is too close to call. Incumbent David Lyons has a 7 vote lead over Richard Williams (329-322) and provisional votes may still impact the result.

The Essex County voter turnout on Election Day is 20.72%, while Montclair showed a huge improvement with around 50%. Every registered voter should go to the polls and cast their precious vote to the candidate(s) of their choice.

SELECTED TWEETS FROM BID LADEN’S SECRET TWITTER ACCOUNT

The United States just released a declassified version of Osama bin Laden’s Twitter account. Most of the military stuff has been removed, but what is left still paints a pretty chilling portrait of a dangerous terrorist leader on the run.

Feb 2: @oblterroristchief  - Walked the compound. Again. The walls could use a new coat of paint. Mauve is a better color than eggshell white. Maybe one wall in bright red as an accent feature. Am I watching too much HGTV?

Feb 3: @oblterroristchief  - Death to Infidels. Did Jessica Simpson put on weight?

March 1: @oblterroristchief  - Thinking about that wacky Khalid Sheik Muhammed - what a nut! It’s the anniversary of his capture. Hope he doesn’t talk about me too much, especially not that Vegas trip.

March 9: @oblterroristchief  - I never use phones. AT&T’s rates are thievery.

Student Loans and Political Moans

Student loans have suddenly become a big deal. Both Obama and Romney are now courting the youth vote by advocating lower rates. I call shenanigans.

First of all, student loan debt is now higher than credit card debt, mortgage debt, any kind of debt you could name. This did not happen overnight or by accident.

The interest rate on student loans is about to double, even though we are experiencing no inflation to speak of.

The problem is not simply the ease of receiving student loans, but the fact that most students are steered into loans with companies that don’t necessarily have their best interests in mind.

Hello Readers,

President Obama recently visited Afghanistan. He promised support to Afghan president Hamid Karzai and will not keep them hanging. However, the 2014 troop withdrawal is still there. After the President’s departure in the city of Kabul, there were explosions caused by the Taliban. They will not live peacefully, and don’t let others live peacefully. Obama’s surprise visit may impact the long term relationship with Afghanistan and the presence of the US in the region. However, the contract between the two countries and attacks in Afghan and Pakistan-Afghan territories will impact the presence of US forces in the region.

Dharun Ravi and Tyler Clementi international news case may take a turn. Ravi has shown very strong statements at the “20/20” Interview. I listened to 101.5 FM on Tuesday, and the majority of the callers favored Ravi and suggested there was not a bias crime. The jury has accepted the charge for the bias crime, as Clementi’s perception of Ravi. Ravi, who was found guilty of bias intimidation for spying on his gay roommate's sexual encounter, is seeking to have the conviction against him overturned and be granted a new trial in the case.

13 individuals have been charged in connection with the hazing death of a Florida A&M University drum major in November 2011. The charges range from misdemeanor hazing to felony hazing, which carries a maximum sentence of six years. Now the question arises, how can we stop hazing? I don’t think we can stop it, but can be reduced and through the tougher penalties, the severe incidents of can be stopped.

The election in Orange has turned wild. Negative campaigns will take their toll on bi-partisanship in the future. The council and mayor’s intention are to serve the people. However, in Orange they are not working together for the benefit of the citizens. I have seen many mailers from Mayor Hawkins and Mr. Warren. However, for Warren I have not seen a single mailer about his platform. Hawkins also has started negative campaigning. The last mailer from Warren was about the signing ceremony with the governor and talking about Hawkins and the governor with the same republican supporters. However, in front of Mayor Hawkins, State Senate President Stephen Sweeney is there. Is Warren denouncing the Democratic Party Senate President too?

In terms of working hard for the people and constantly being at the forefront without as much recognition, Elroy Corbitt is doing a great job, and it is something that should be noticed.

Have a wonderful week. I’ll talk to you next week.

You May Not Believe But You Can't Leave

marvinwolf1It is standard for totalitarian countries to pass laws to prevent its people from leaving. For example, after 1941, Jews in Hitler’s Germany were prevented from leaving Germany or other Eastern European countries under Nazi control. Modern Iran works the same way.

And soon, so will the U.S.

I remember a time when the U.S. used to brag about America’s freedom of travel and complained about other countries restricting that right. I think that time was as long ago as last week, when some officials were talking smack about North Korea.
