Psychologist and Certified Personal Trainer Offers Tips for Keeping New Year’s Resolutions

ingersollGetting in shape tops the list of most New Year’s Resolutions. But anyone who enters a packed gym in early January knows the crowds will surely thin by the end of February.

Dr. Joel Ingersoll, a clinical psychologist and a certified personal trainer, knows the psychology of keeping fitness resolutions – and the secrets of success in 2012.

“New Year's connotes a fresh start, and it's great that people want to start the year off with a desire to be more fit and healthy,” said Dr. Ingersoll, Director of the Center for Psychological Health & Fitness.  “But we know that 60 percent of gym memberships go unused. As both a psychologist and a personal trainer I see many people making the same mistakes and setting themselves up for challenges in the New Year.”

Dr. Ingersoll is one of just a handful of clinical psychologists in the nation who also are certified as personal trainers. He provides psychotherapy to patients and will add on 15, 30 or 45 minute sessions of personal training to the psychology session. Dr Ingersoll believes that physical fitness can improve mood, reduce stress, depression, anxiety and lead to better mental health.

Sexual Abuse of Children

Sexual abuse of a child is when a child is inappropriately exposed or subjected to sexual contact, activity or behavior. It includes any type of sexual contact and can include sexual objects. It is done by an offender. Other forms of sexual abuse include pornography, using a child as a prostitute, exhibition, solicitation or erotic behavior.

It has been reported that sexual abuse takes place more than 80,000 times a year. This is not a reliable number because many cases of sexual abuse are not reported. Many times, the victims are afraid to tell. It may be a long time before they share their story. There are feelings of shame. The offender may play a part in keeping this abuse as a secret. Sometimes, children are provided with candy, toys or other forms of gifts to maintain secrecy.

What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

Mercedes_ValleWe all know someone who is hyperactive. Usually, this person has a difficult time paying attention or sitting still for a while. Sometimes, this person acts impulsively. The hyperactivity usually comes with difficulty paying attention. This is called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder by the American Psychiatric Association. It is also found that individuals with ADHD may have a reduced level of the necessary neuorochemicals. Those neuorchemicals impair the ability to control functions such as attention and inhibition. Not everyone who is distracted and moves around constantly has this diagnosis. This is usually diagnosed when a person has many of the above-mentioned symptoms and has them for more than six months with disruption in their regular daily living.

Children who have this problem tend to get in trouble frequently in school. They have a hard time staying focused, do not complete tasks, are fidgety and cannot sit still. Their tolerance level is low. They usually wind up in the principal’s office most often. It is reported that boys have ADHD more often than girls. The reason for this is not known.
