Keith is mixing up LEED and FSC. NJ is looking to demand LEED products be used on state jobs. LEED points are easy, almost all of the products at any lumber yard carry LEED points. Domestic plywood and lumber have points associated with them. The overall level of buildings are broken into categories, LEED silver, gold, platinum. You get points for using domestic lumber and plywood, the higher the R value for insulation the more points, the better the window, appliances, HVAC the more points. FSC is annoying, hard to get, expensive and requires carrying double the inventory. FSC also costs mills lots of money, so small domestic mills cannot get FSC certified. Large foreign mills are spending the money, so FSC makes no sense. How can shipping a piece of lumber from New Zealand be any greener than pulling from domestic mills? LEED has no chain of custody, no extra paperwork, no need for yards to have special certification. No one is demanding material be FSC certified. - Gage Matson
