The G.I. Go Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides transition assistance to all military veterans, will be holding their first "Job and G.I. Bill" fair of 2012.
As many as 100 employers from across New Jersey and its bordering states are expected to attend the March 13 job fair at Rutgers-Newark's Paul Robeson Campus Center at 350 Martin Luther King Blvd. The focus will be assisting veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan while also providing opportunities for veterans of previous generations, said Jack Fanous, Executive Director of the G.I. Go Fund.
"The men and women who have served in the armed forces make great employees," said Fanous. "Nowhere else can you find such dedicated and hard-working or disciplined workers. They have been well trained and possess valuable skills that not only make them great soldiers on the battlefield, but outstanding members of the workforce."
The event is expected to have an even larger turnout than previous successful job fairs as companies will be looking to capitalize on the new Federal VOW to Hire Heroes Act, which will provide a tax credit of up to $9,600 to employers who hire veterans.
The Annual Job and G.I. Bill fair will also include dozens of colleges and universities looking to enroll veterans who wish to utilize their Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits to earn their degree.
The event is being sponsored by Rutgers University, Thomas Edison State College, Berkeley College, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Montclair State University, Drew University. The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce and the Newark Regional Business Partnership are also sponsoring the event.
Media Sponsors include The Star-Ledger and a host of prominent NJ radio stations, including WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM, WMGQ Magic 98.3 FM, WCTC 1450 AM, 105.5 WDHA, WMTR AM 1250, WWTR 1170, WRAT 95.9 FM, Magic 100.1-FM, and 89.5 FM WSOU.
"We're calling 2012 the year of the veteran," Fanous said. "With the close of the war in Iraq and thousands of veterans returning home in search for jobs, our country has an opportunity and obligation to hire our veterans and once again make our economy the greatest the world has ever seen."
